Green card lottery
DV-2027: New rules, new chances!
Applications for the DV-2027 Green Card Lottery are expected to open in October 2025 and run until early November. Exact dates haven’t been announced yet, but it’s smart to prepare now—especially given possible rule changes.
What may change?
In August 2025, the U.S. Department of State published a draft of new participation rules. If adopted, starting with DV-2027 you will be required to attach a scan of your international passport with your entry. You won’t be able to change the passport after winning.
What to do now?
- No passport? Apply in advance to avoid fall backlogs.
- Passport expiring soon? Renew it. It must be valid at submission, and ideally for 1.5+ years thereafter so you don’t need to replace it post-selection. Name spelling differences between old and new passports can cause disqualification—this occurs often with Russian passports.
Core eligibility
- Country of birth must be eligible (citizenship does not matter).
- Education: at least completed high school or 2 years of qualifying work experience.
- Age: 18+. You must list your spouse and all children under 21 in the entry.
